Leaders tell the ‘why.’ Walt Disney told the ‘why.’

Managers focus on who, when, how and where.  Leaders always include the why.

Walt Disney did this. As a result, Floyd Norman is one of the world’s top animators.

“Walt Disney did not always provide the answers for you. Ask anybody who has worked for Mr. Disney,” Norman said. “He made it quite clear what he wanted and then our job was to deliver the goods. And so for a young kid like myself, working in story, to have a guy like Walt Disney… guiding you along the way, it was a… great opportunity to learn from a master, firsthand.” (watch below)

When you give individuals the why and they buy into the why, stand back and get out of their way. Like Disney, let them figure out the how. They will accomplish amazing things with very little management because they will have become responsible followers. Their morale will be higher, and they will be more enthusiastic and positive about what they are doing—all because you took the time to explain why.

Real leaders lead with empathy first while simultaneously controlling the P&L. Real leaders don’t hide behind the data. Real leaders help others understand why they are doing what they are doing and why it’s important to the organization and to the individuals in the organization.
