Hiking in a remote, Utah canyon in 2003, Aron Ralston got his arm pinned under an 800-pound boulder. Ralston tried to free himself. Provisions dwindled as days passed. His situation dire.
Day 5, he realized his arm was dead, and he also had an epiphany. He realized he did not have to die with his arm.
Ralston said, “my epiphany made it easy for me to apply a tourniquet and cut my arm off with a pocket knife.” No comfortable task, but he did it. He then applied First Aid and hiked out of the canyon. “It’s so amazing to be alive. We decide if a life event is going to be a tragedy or a triumph.”
Is something dead in your life? Yet, you emotionally hold on when you should figuratively cut it off? It might be a job; a loved one, a relationship, an opportunity, or a cherished dream. Staying attached to the dead part, you risk dying with it, just as if you, are pinned beneath the boulder.
Aron chose to live. To do that, he had to separate himself from the dead limb. Courage? Yes! But here’s the critical part: along with his courage was a conscious decision to outlive the part that had died.
After doing all we can to save it, sometimes we need to accept that a part of our life is dead. We then need to cut it off emotionally, apply First Aid, and hike out.
