Optimist Or Pessimist?

Optimist or Pessimist?

Our most pressing challenges can be eased (if not erased) with a heavy dose of optimism. Studies prove that optimists are happier, healthier and more successful.

While pessimists talk about I, their problems and what dread awaits them, optimists talk about WE, solutions and a bright future. Optimistic folks are not stuck in the past, or anxious about what misfortune might befall them. They see obstacles as opportunities, not roadblocks. While pessimists focus on who they are, optimists focus on who they might become and set goals and act to make it a reality.

Psychologists have discovered that 50% of our optimism is based on our genetics and another 10% is from our circumstances (e.g., where you live, health, work, etc.). So, if you have a decent house, health and a job your optimism is going to be higher.

But, the last 40% is all on you. You choose how to view this world. As I’ve written before, you can think yourself happier, and guess what, happiness breeds more happiness. Optimism promotes more optimism. When you optimistically look forward to your future, you multiply happiness while the pessimist magnifies dread and anxiety.

So: is your glass half empty or half full?

More on that next week.
