Don’t Just See The Story; Live The Story.

“A picture is worth a thousand words” is attributed to Confucius and others. While there is some truth here, a picture can limit our infinite imagination. A picture connects the dots quickly, but a book takes you beyond reality.

When I write, I tell stories because it is the most poignant way to allow the reader to envision a world that a picture or movie can’t capture.

We have all read a book and have been eager to see the movie, only to leave the theater disappointedly mumbling, “Jack Reacher was bigger and tougher in the book than Tom Cruise portrayed.” Or “Quidditch was more fun, Lord Voldemort was more evil, and Hagrid was more lovable in my mind.”

Special effects with all their allure are no match for the reader’s limitless imagination. A description of a castle will be different in your mind. While thousands of readers read the same words, the castle in your imagination will be all yours.

Reading emotionally puts you in the narrative. It allows you to magically enter the minds of others. We do not just read about Huck Finn; we become Huck Fin, suspenders, straw hat, raft and all.

That is why reading is more powerful than watching. You don’t just see a story; you live the story. A part of you becomes the story.

Why is that important? Tune in next week.
