I write weekly; it stimulates ideas for my books. The more I write, the bigger the audience. It also means I attract haters.
No matter what you do, some haters will try to make you feel ugly and shut you down. They’ll scorn you publicly, and there’s zilch you can do about it.
A few weeks ago, I had a post from a reader who said I sounded like a “rich, snarky, arrogant jerk.” I take feedback seriously. Yes, I like to challenge people to be better. The last thing I want is to sound like an a-hole. Rich made me LOL, but, the other adjectives needed soul searching. I replied a few times to the critic to open up dialogue and got no reply.
I welcome constructive criticism; I use it to improve. I listen intently to others that disagree, especially from other authors. But (this is super important), if someone merely wants to criticize and is unwilling to engage in dialogue, that person is no critic. They are a hater. There is a thin line between a helpful voice of correction and hate.
I don’t write to make all happy. I write to improve lives in some small way. I feel it’s my charge to help others find the truths I have discovered. If I do that, I’m good.
If my thoughts or books get flamed, it just means many are reading them.
Use criticism to improve and ditch the hate.
