Leaders Must Foster Employee Ideas, Not Smother Them.

I like to write. I have this bent to want to do everything on my own.

Starting a book, I want to do all the writing, editing, cover design, etc. I have this odd aversion to getting outside feedback until it’s completed and worthy of critique. However, I have learned the hard way; writing is a task better shared.

I’ve found that most lofty accomplishments require tons of input and energy from vested individuals sooner than later. The more eyes reading my stuff, the more problems I find upfront.

Yes, I can attempt to do it all, but the results will be a gazillion times better if I let real cohorts help. For me, that’s the surest way to make lofty happen.

This is even more important in a business setting. As a leader, you cannot do it all. You have to set direction and then encourage coworker’s that their inspiration and input are needed. Leaders must set a tone that fosters employee’s ideas, not smother them.

Your team members are capable of doing more than you realize. When you appreciate that their contribution will help advance the direction, that’s when you make epic gains.

Ask coworkers for ideas then sit back and listen. The worst that will happen is somebody will tell you your idea could be improved…and that is valuable input, whether you agree, or not.
