Accept & Forgive Flaws, While Cherishing Strengths.

In West Virginia, I sold door to door. One day I saw a dog chained to a stake in a yard. The circle of brown dirt indicated how far the dog could roam. The dog lunged at me, but the taut chain stopped him.

Just then, a man stepped out and said howdy. We exchanged small talk while he filled a bowl with dog food. He then used a stick to push the bowl inside the circle. I asked why he fed his dog like this.

He said, “Son, this is the meanest dog on the planet. I don’t get near him.”

“Aren’t dogs’ man’s best friend?”

“Not this dog.”

“Why keep him? If you can’t pet, or love him, why not put him down?”

“Oh no, this dog may be mean, but I love this dog. Best dog I ever owned. You see, I am a champion coon hunter, and this dog will mix it up with any coon, anywhere, and never back down.”

“This dog may not be the best for giving affection, but he is the absolute best dog for hunting—he loves hunting, and I love hunting, so we love it together.”

The Hunter recognized the dog’s failings and protected himself while he stayed focused on the dog’s merits.

I pondered, had friends metaphorically “put me down” because of my faults? Had I “put others down” because of their human weaknesses?

No relationship is perfect. Sometimes we’re hunters, and sometimes we’re dogs.
