– you and a leader disagree?
– a leader says X, and it’s really Y?
– the leader/organization creates an ethos of absolute obedience?
If you belong to an organization that fosters a culture where members put utter trust in their leaders and shouldn’t be challenged, internal alarms should be shrieking.
We all know organizations where you use common sense if leaders have not given direction. But if direction is given, you don’t need common sense, because their direction is indisputable: you support and follow, period.
Reminds me of a scene from “A Few Good Men”
Col. Jessep: We follow orders, son. We follow orders or people die. It’s that simple. Are we clear?
Kaffee: Yes, sir.
Col. Jessep: ARE WE CLEAR?
You can follow these pied pipers right over the cliff, thinking they know best. Or you can require more from leaders; that urge the combination of individual common sense and experience, blended with their wisdom.
Some that dare to question leaders are occasionally shamed and shunned, possibly as an example to others who might also be internally questioning.
Society needs fewer blind followers. It wouldn’t have made a good movie, but if the Corporal Dawson’s out there were to use more common sense, it would make a much better world.
