Two good friends passed each other on the street one afternoon. One was sad, eyes moist, close to tears. His friend asked, “Hey friend, why so down?”
“Well, three months ago, a distant uncle passed away and left me fifty thousand dollars.”
“Wow, that’s good money, but why the sad face?”
“Well, two months ago, my third cousin died and left me a hundred thousand dollars.”
“Really? I’m sorry for your loss, but in a way, you’ve been fortunate.”
He snapped at me, “You don’t understand! Last month, my great grandfather passed, and I inherited five hundred thousand dollars.”
The perplexed friend said, “Again, I’m sorry for your loss, but you’ve been blessed, why so down?”
“Well, this month . . . nothing!”
When you receive something regularly, you come to expect it, even when “it” is a gift. If the gifts are received long enough, you grow entitled. You will feel hurt, possibly angry if the gifts stop coming your way.
I have many blessings in my life, warm home, good job, health, beautiful family, loyal friends, clean drinking water, electricity, gorgeous scenery. I have these and many more, and yet sometimes I fail to be grateful.
This Thanksgiving, let’s all recognize the good we take for granted. Let’s focus on what we have rather than what we don’t have.
